A heavy history in the AFC East
The New York Jets are preparing for their first division game of the season when they visit the New England Patriots on Sunday. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson made it clear how important the fixture is, calling it a big game for the team.
New York enters the matchup with a 2-3 record after beating the Cleveland Browns with an eight-sack defensive effort. New England holds a 3-2 record under coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye.
Divisional contests have proven difficult for the Jets for a long time. They have finished last in the AFC East seven times in the past 10 seasons. Their division record over that stretch is 13-47, which includes a 4-26 mark on the road.
Chasing a shift in Foxborough
The Jets last claimed the division title back in 2002, before rookie David Bailey was born. In head coach Aaron Glenn's first season, New York went 0-6 in division play. Since Garrett Wilson joined the roster in 2022, their division record stands at 6-18.
Finding success at Gillette Stadium has been rare for New York. Prior to winning there in the 2023 season finale, the Jets had gone 12 seasons without a victory in Foxborough. They are 1-14 at New England since their 2010 playoff win.
Nickelback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. noted that going on the road to get a win against the division champions would mean everything to the organization. Glenn added that the squad remains focused on preparing for this single game rather than looking back at past results.
