Jets Face Receiver Crisis Ahead of Detroit Lions Clash

Injury Woes for Jets Offense

The New York Jets are facing a major injury crisis in their receiving department ahead of their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions. Starting wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is currently listed as questionable after injuring his finger during training on Thursday. Mitchell got his finger caught in a teammate's jersey and practiced on Friday with a heavy wrap and splints on his right hand.

Coach Aaron Glenn did not give away too many details about the injury. He only mentioned that he does not think the finger is broken. Mitchell is a key part of the team's passing attack, having recorded nine receptions for 123 yards so far. He is the most targeted player on the team with 15 targets this season, making him second only to Garrett Wilson.

If Mitchell cannot play or is limited on Sunday, Isaiah Williams and Shepard will likely step up as the second and third receivers. The team also has undrafted rookie Malik McClain, who has no game experience.

New Faces in the Squad

With Mitchell's status uncertain and three other receivers already on injured reserve, the Jets have had to make quick moves. Among those on injured reserve is first round pick Omar Cooper Jr. who is sidelined with an ankle injury. To cover these gaps, the Jets have promoted veteran Sterling Shepard and first year player Jamaal Pritchett from the practice squad.

The 33 year old Shepard joined the practice squad just two weeks ago. He spent last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he caught 39 passes for 371 yards and scored one touchdown. Pritchett is also available to make his NFL debut and could help with kick returns. The Jets need this cover because Kene Nwangwu is ruled out with a back injury. The team will also be without tight end Mason Taylor who is suffering from a thumb injury.
