Defending The Spending

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones faced criticism on Tuesday after stating on 105.3 The Fan that spending money on a coach has no direct correlation to winning in the NFL.

Appearing on the team network on Friday, Jones spoke for more than five minutes to clarify his stance on the matter. He stated that not one time in his life has he ever let money stand in the way of hiring someone if he wanted to do it.

Past Hiring Decisions

Before hiring Brian Schottenheimer in 2025, the Cowboys interviewed Leslie Frazier, Robert Saleh, and Kellen Moore. Other top names like Ben Johnson ended up with the Chicago Bears, while Saleh joined the Titans and Moore went to the Saints.

Jones stated that no coach has ever turned him down simply because of low pay. He also claimed he has tried to lure successful coaches away from other teams in the past while knowing full well he would pay them for their success.

A History Of Managers

While coaching salaries are not public, Schottenheimer is believed to earn in the bottom half of the league. His predecessor, Mike McCarthy, earned $8 million per season, and Jason Garrett signed a five-year, $30 million extension in 2015.

Jones has employed seven coaches since parting ways with Jimmy Johnson following back to back Super Bowl titles in the 1992 and 1993 seasons. Jones admitted that hiring a coach always involves ambiguity and risk, but he maintained that refusing to pay for success is ridiculous.
