Jones Defends Coaching Spend

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has claimed that spending huge money on head coaches has nothing to do with winning games in the NFL. Speaking on radio station 105.3 the Fan, Jones stated his research shows zero correlation between coaching pay and team success across the league.

His comments come while Dallas struggles to find top results. The team has not played in an NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season. Jones continues to serve as both team owner and general manager.

High Valuation And Cheap Contracts

The stance on coaching money comes despite the team having massive financial strength. Forbes values the Dallas Cowboys at 17 billion dollars, making them the most valuable sports franchise. They generated 1.28 billion dollars in revenue and 677 million dollars in operating income in 2025. The second most valuable NFL team, the Los Angeles Rams, is valued at 13.5 billion dollars.

Reported details show Jones promoted head coach Brian Schottenheimer after he served as offensive coordinator. Dallas was the only team to interview him. Reports state Schottenheimer earns between 5 million and 8 million dollars per year, which places him among the lowest paid head coaches in the league. A coaching agent told reporter Jane Slater that Jones refuses to pay 13 million dollars or more for a coach.

Struggles On The Field

The results under Schottenheimer remain mixed. The team currently sits at 3-5 this season after blowing a 14 point lead and losing in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals. Schottenheimer went 7-9-1 in his first year, bringing his overall head coaching record to 10-14-1.

While the NFL enforces a salary cap on players, there are no limits on coaching or staff spending. Other franchises spend heavily on experienced leaders. The New York Giants pay John Harbaugh 20 million dollars annually according to Adam Schefter, and they currently lead the NFC East. Other winning head coaches like Andy Reid, Sean McVay and Bill Belichick have also earned top salaries.
