Hafley Familiar With Detroit Threat

Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley knows what to expect when taking on the Detroit Lions on Sunday at 1 p.m. E.T. Hafley spent two years preparing to play Detroit when he served as defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

He praised Detroit head coach Dan Campbell and highlighted the talent of Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta. The Lions currently boast the number one offense in the league, averaging 395 yards per game and 29 points per game.

Gibbs ranks second in rushing yards while St. Brown ranks tenth in receiving yards. Quarterback Goff has thrown 15 touchdowns and just one interception this season.

Defense Facing Big Challenge

The Dolphins field the youngest defense in the NFL. Hafley compared this upcoming test to their Week 2 game against the 49ers. He noted that Detroit can attack from different angles in both the run and pass game.

The Lions rank third in the NFL for explosive plays, which are rushes of at least 10 yards or passes of at least 20 yards. Miami wants to limit these big moments by controlling time of possession and keeping Detroit off the field.

Rookie left guard Kadyn Proctor is expected to play on Sunday after missing last week due to a concussion. He trained fully twice near the end of the week. Miami missed him during last week's loss to the Patriots, where they recorded a season low 1.74 yards before contact per rush attempt. Running back Ollie Gordon II stated that having Proctor back will help the unit mesh again.

Passing Game Seeks Progress

Sunday also gives the Dolphins passing attack a chance to step up. Miami currently ranks 30th in passing yards per game. On paper, Detroit allows a league high 276.6 passing yards per game.

However, Lions defenders still sack opposing quarterbacks at the eighth highest rate in the NFL. Lions performance has already earned them five wins this season.

Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis said he is not looking at the stats as a clear advantage. Willis noted that Detroit has won more games than Miami, so his main focus remains on executing the game plan cleanly on Sunday.
