Big Night in Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night at Lumen Field. The game marked the return of Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III, but wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba stole the show.

Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and one touchdown. He now has 867 receiving yards through seven games this season. That is 231 yards more than any other player in the league.

Key Play Breaks Through Chiefs Defense

Kansas City entered Week 7 with a 5-0 record and had not allowed a touchdown catch to a wide receiver all season. That streak ended in the second quarter.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold changed the play at the line of scrimmage and floated a 27 yard pass down the left sideline. Smith-Njigba beat cornerback Mansoor Delane in one on one coverage for the touchdown. It was his eighth touchdown catch of the season, which leads the NFL.

Seattle converted 11 of 16 third downs during the game. Four of those conversions came on throws from Darnold to Smith-Njigba. That included a 33 yard catch and run, which was Seattle's longest play of the night.

Historic Numbers for the Receiver

Smith-Njigba is making history with his early season stats. His 867 yards through seven games ties Lance Alworth in 1965 for the eighth most in league history over that span. He is also the sixth player in NFL history with six 100 yard receiving games in his team's first seven matches.

He is the seventh player ever, and the first in the Super Bowl era, to reach at least 850 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in seven games. After putting up 1,793 receiving yards in 2025, he is now on pace to break Calvin Johnson's single season record of 1,964 yards set in 2012.

Heavy Workload and Team Praise

Smith-Njigba gets 36.6% of Seattle's targets, the highest mark in the league. He also accounts for 53.9% of the team's receiving yards, which is the second highest share through seven games in the last 75 seasons.

"He's unguardable," Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori said. "Knowing that he's getting double teamed and they're sending cloud his way and he's still making plays, it's crazy."

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald praised his star player after the match. Macdonald said you would be crazy not to make him the primary option on as many concepts as possible.
