Facing the Frustration
The new general manager of the Baltimore Orioles stepped into his role with full awareness of recent struggles. During his introductory news conference on Tuesday, Jared Banner addressed the supporters directly. He noted that the supporters are frustrated after a rough couple of years.
Banner stated that the staff shares that frustration. He offered a firm commitment to build a winner in Baltimore. His arrival comes during a period of heavy skepticism from fans following two straight losing seasons.
Dividing Front Office Duties
Mike Elias explained how the front office duties will work moving forward. Banner will take charge of internal players, internal coaches, player development, performance, and health care. Elias will focus more directly on scouting, acquisitions, amateur and professional deals, and contracts.
Elias earned a promotion to team president last year. That change opened the general manager position and allowed the franchise to bring in Banner from the Chicago Cubs.
Fixing Player Development
Recent years brought struggles for several young players in the organization, including Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, and Jackson Holliday. Banner plans to evaluate all current methods. He stated that the team might have to get comfortable being uncomfortable.
His core development philosophy involves making practice match real competition. By doing that, actual games should feel easier for the athletes.
Connecting with Legends
Banner also spent time acknowledging franchise greats like Cal Ripken Jr. and Jim Palmer. He has a lunch scheduled with Ripken, who is part of the ownership group. He also made sure to reply immediately to a text from Palmer.
With high pressure surrounding the front office and an uncertain future ahead, Banner expressed excitement about joining the organization and working alongside Elias to turn things around.
