Moving to the Major Leagues
Japanese right-hander Kaima Taira is taking the next step in his career. His club, the Seibu Lions, announced they will allow him to pursue a move to Major League Baseball. This transfer will happen through the posting system, which permits certain players to sign with international teams.
Strong Numbers on the Mound
The 26-year-old pitcher had an impressive run this season in Japan, finishing with a 12-5 record and a low ERA of 1.36. Over his career in Japan, he holds a record of 37-24. In 2025 alone, he also recorded 31 saves for the Lions.
Taira has high ambitions for his future across the Pacific. He wants to win a Cy Young award and pitch in the World Series, according to statements reported by Kyodo news agency.
Following Other Japanese Stars
Taira is not the only star looking to leave Japan for American baseball. Japanese slugger Teruaki Sato also stated his desire to move after hitting 39 home runs and bringing in 106 RBI this season.
Japanese players have left a strong legacy in Major League Baseball over the last thirty years. Ichiro Suzuki recently entered the Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win consecutive World Series titles in 2025, with Ohtani claiming his fourth MVP award and Yamamoto taking home World Series MVP honors.
