An early goal at Turf Moor

Jamie Vardy put Burnley ahead in the 20th minute at Turf Moor on Friday. He made a trademark run behind the Wolves defence before finishing with his left foot past José Sá.

Despite that strong start, Wolves took all three points with a 2-1 victory. The result moves Wolves up to sixth in the Championship table, while Burnley sits fourth from bottom.

A long scoring history

Friday's goal was Vardy's first in the Championship since April 2024, when he scored against Preston North End while playing for Leicester City. The 39 year old striker started his remarkable 20 year goalscoring streak at non-league Stocksbridge Park Steels in 2006, after being released by Sheffield Wednesday at the age of 16.

He climbed through the lower divisions with Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town before joining Leicester in 2012. He spent 13 years at Leicester, scoring more than 180 goals in over 400 appearances, and famously won the Premier League title in 2016 and the Golden Boot in 2019-20.

Return to English football

After leaving Leicester in 2025, Vardy spent last year playing for Cremonense in Serie A. He returned to English football this summer by signing a one-year contract with Burnley.
