Winston takes charge under pressure

Jameis Winston is stepping into the starting quarterback role for the New York Giants this Sunday. He takes over from Jaxson Dart, who is out for the regular season after having surgery on Friday to repair his meniscus and MCL. While coach John Harbaugh says Dart could return if the team makes a playoff run, the immediate future belongs to Winston.

Winston had a rough outing in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception in a 28-6 loss. The team believes he struggled because the game plan was built for Dart, and the silent count was a problem. This week, the Giants have adjusted their plays to suit Winston's pocket passing style. With rain and wind expected at the Meadowlands, the team plans to rely on a power running game led by Cam Skattebo. Jake Haener will serve as the backup after being promoted from the practice squad on Saturday.

Giants keeping their options open

How Winston performs against the Tennessee Titans will decide how hard the Giants push to bring in another veteran. Harbaugh has stated that "all options are open" as the front office looks at several potential targets.

Free agent Jimmy Garoppolo is one of the top names on the list. The Giants have already spoken with his camp, though he has not worked out for them yet. Signing Garoppolo is appealing because it would not cost a draft pick. Garoppolo mulled retirement in the offseason but is open to a return on a 53 man roster.

Other options include Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew II, Vikings reserve J.J. McCarthy, 49ers backup Mac Jones, and Chiefs backup Justin Fields. Brandon Allen, who spent training camp with the Giants, is also being considered.
