The Lane Change at Quarterback
The New York Giants are adjusting their offense after quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury in Week 2 and went on injured reserve. Backup quarterback Jameis Winston is now taking over for the rest of the season.
Coach John Harbaugh described the transition as a lane change rather than a complete change of direction. The team prepared for multiple styles during training camp, practicing close to 300 plays. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy noted this preparation keeps the team from falling into a hole when injuries happen.
Adapting to Winston's Style
The biggest change under the 32 year old Winston will be the lack of quarterback runs. Dart was a major threat on the ground, rushing for 54 yards in a season opening win against the Dallas Cowboys. Winston is a traditional passing quarterback who is known for throwing deep.
With Winston under center, the run pass options will likely decrease. Lineman Jon Runyan called Winston a gunslinger. The team will still try to establish a physical running game and then take deep shots down the field. Winston has averaged 9.9 air yards per target since entering the league in 2014, which is the highest mark in that span.
Impact on Running Backs and Receivers
The change benefits running back Cam Skattebo, who has taken 67 percent of the carries over the first two weeks. Skattebo is followed in the rotation by Devin Singletary, Najee Harris, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Fullback Patrick Ricard is also expected to see more playing time.
In the passing game, tight end Isaiah Likely might see fewer targets. Dart targeted tight ends on 24 percent of his passes, while Winston has a career average of 19 percent. Winston is already working to build chemistry with wide receivers Malik Nabers and Darnell Mooney. Nabers said Winston trusts his receivers to make plays and believes in their work.
