Winston Keeps the Job
Jameis Winston is staying as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Coach John Harbaugh made this clear after the team secured a 12-7 victory over the Titans. Even if the Giants bring in another quarterback this week, Winston will keep his spot.
Harbaugh was asked if Winston would remain the starter. The coach answered with a definitive yes. This decision comes after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart underwent knee surgery on Friday, ruling him out for the rest of the regular season.
Doing What Was Required
The game was played in difficult conditions with heavy rain and wind from a nor'easter. Winston threw for 119 yards. While the Giants did not score any touchdowns, Winston managed the game well and did not turn the ball over. He led the team to four scoring drives.
This was Winston's first start since Dart's injury. He struggled when he came off the bench against the Los Angeles Rams last Monday. However, Harbaugh was pleased with his performance against the Titans, saying Winston did what was required in the tough weather.
Teammates Back the Veteran
Winston has the full backing of his teammates. Offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor made it clear that the players are not worried about rumors of a new signing. He said Winston is their quarterback now and they are going to ride with him for the rest of the season.
Center John Michael Schmitz added that the team has complete belief in Winston. The veteran with 12 years of experience is focusing on the positives. Winston said he is grateful to be judged on a win, noting that he would always prefer a victory over putting up big passing numbers in a loss.
What Lies Ahead for the Giants
The Giants currently hold a 2-1 record. They will host the Arizona Cardinals next week at MetLife Stadium. While Winston is the starter, the team still needs depth. Inexperienced quarterback Jake Haener was the only backup on Sunday.
The Giants are expected to sign another quarterback soon. Possible options include free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew II of Arizona, and J.J. McCarthy of Minnesota. However, Harbaugh insists that any new arrival will not change Winston's status as the main man.
