Winston under pressure to perform

The New York Giants recently traded for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, sending a fifth round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings. Despite this move, veteran Jameis Winston remains the starting quarterback for now. McCarthy is starting his time in New York as the third string option behind Winston and Jake Haener.

This setup looks temporary, but Winston's performance over the next two weeks will decide how fast things change. The Giants face the Arizona Cardinals at home this Sunday before traveling to play the Washington Commanders. Coach John Harbaugh is focusing only on the immediate future, even wearing a shirt to practice that read 1-0 to make his point.

The struggle for form

Winston knows he has to improve quickly. He currently has a 22.9 QBR, which is the lowest among 30 qualifying NFL quarterbacks. His 29.2 percent off target rate is also the worst in the league.

Despite these struggles, the Giants are currently 2-1 and can afford to be patient. Winston helped secure a win against the Tennessee Titans last week, where offensive coordinator Matt Nagy noted that wet weather played a role in some of the bad throws. The team still believes in the 32 year old veteran. The locker room remembers his strong play last season against the Detroit Lions, and the front office recently gave him a two year contract extension that guarantees over $6 million next season.
