Strong performances across the league
The Jacksonville Jaguars continued their impressive start to the season with a 19-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, staying at the top of the AFC South. Nigerian-American linebacker Foyesade Oluokun starred in the victory with 10 tackles, including six solo and one for a loss. Week 5 brought many top performances from players with ties to Africa, though several ended up on losing teams.
Zimbabwean player Nate Landman of the LA Rams made 13 tackles and forced two fumbles in a 37-34 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Jaxon Smith-Njigba repped Sierra Leone on his helmet and scored a 16-yard touchdown on a pass from Sam Darnold, putting up 118 total yards. Despite his efforts, the Seattle Seahawks went down 32-29 to the San Francisco 49ers.
Defensive standouts and rising stars
The 49ers benefited from strong performances by Nigerian-American players Malik Mustapha and Osa Odighizuwa. Mustapha recorded five solo tackles out of seven total, plus one fumble reception and one pass defended. His defensive work made life difficult for Smith-Njigba in the decisive stages of the game.
Other notable performances included Emeka Egbuka and YaYa Diaby helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys. Boye Mafe picked up a sack and a forced fumble for the Cincinnati Bengals in a 31-24 win over the Miami Dolphins, while Sam Kamara picked up his first career sack in a 17-12 defeat for the Cleveland Browns against the New York Jets.
