The Tall Tales of Miz

Jacob Misiorowski is a 6-foot-7 right-hander for the Milwaukee Brewers. He throws the baseball consistently harder than any man before him. Aside from his fastball, he is known in the clubhouse for sharing stories that often sound unbelievable. His longtime pitching coach Bob Zimmermann said Misiorowski is a humble and innocent guy who worries when his speed drops slightly. Teammates love his stream of consciousness musings, even if some details strain credulity.

Speed and Success on the Mound

Misiorowski threw a pitch at least 104 mph on 22 occasions this season. He averaged a fastball of 100.5 mph, which smashed the previous record for a qualified starting pitcher. This speed propelled the 24-year-old to a stellar first full season. He led Major League Baseball with a 1.80 ERA, struck out 252 batters in 174⅔ innings, and is expected to win the National League Cy Young Award. Over the winter, he worked hard to turn his physical gifts into something consistent.

Teammates Share the Jokes

Teammates frequently tease Misiorowski about his tall tales. Rookie right-hander Logan Henderson laughed at the idea that Misiorowski's fiancée, Elle Nicas, catches his offseason bullpens. Nicas actually was a softball catcher in high school and does help with his work, though she gets frustrated when he throws a slider. Other players noted his claims about being a scratch golfer in high school or having the greatest arm in the history of the catching position.

Chasing a Title

Misiorowski has grown up a lot over the past year, handling news conferences with ease and showing picture evidence of the 15-point bucks he hunts with first baseman Andrew Vaughn. The Milwaukee Brewers are looking to win their first World Series title in the franchise's 58-year history. Misiorowski will start Game 1 on Friday, putting the hopes of the franchise squarely on his right arm.
