Unusual calls in the final minutes
Portland Trail Blazers star Ja Morant plans to appeal a technical foul he received for flopping during a 136-129 road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
The game became slow and disrupted in the final six minutes. Referees issued three separate technical fouls for flopping. Morant, Blazers forward Toumani Camara, and Lakers forward Ziaire Williams were all penalized. The two teams combined to shoot 71 free throws throughout the night.
Blazers coach Micah Nori pointed out how rare three flopping calls in one game is. He noted that the league only had 27 flop calls in 2,000 total games last season. He added that the officials made it a point of emphasis during the match.
Late quarter drama and player reaction
Morant received his technical foul while defending Lakers guard Austin Reaves in the fourth quarter. Portland held a tight 121-120 lead when Reaves drove toward the paint. Morant took a bump to his chest and moved backwards with both arms raised.
Morant explained that he simply showed his hands and absorbed the contact without falling down. He stated that he intends to appeal the decision, which carries an estimated fine of 2,000 dollars.
Morant scored a season high 23 points in the victory. He said the team did well not to let the penalty deflate them. Teammate Damian Lillard added 21 points and hit a late three pointer to secure the win. Lillard said referees were forcing the calls during a close, back and forth finish.
