Toney pleads not guilty in London court
England striker Ivan Toney has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge following an incident at a London nightclub. The 30 year old striker appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday morning for a brief five minute hearing.
He is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Saber Da Silva. The alleged confrontation took place on December 6 last year at the 100 Wardour Street club in Soho, central London.
An earlier court hearing was told that the two men squared up to each other before Toney allegedly lunged forward, headbutted the complainant, and hit him with a few punches.
Toney arrived at the court building at around 9.10 a.m. dressed in black sunglasses, grey trousers, and a button up jacket over a shirt and tie. He was released on unconditional bail following the hearing.
Trial date and career context
Judge Christopher Hehir set a provisional trial date for June 12, 2028. The judge apologized to Toney for the delay, noting that crown courts are dealing with a massive backlog of work and operating under a lot of pressure.
The Metropolitan Police carried out an investigation into the incident, and the criminal charge was officially announced in late July.
Toney currently plays in the Saudi Pro League for Al Ahli, having made a surprise transfer there in 2024. Before moving to Saudi Arabia, he scored 72 goals across four years at Brentford. He also played for Northampton, Newcastle, and Peterborough earlier in his career.
On the international stage, Toney has earned 10 caps and scored one goal for England. He was part of the squad for this summer's World Cup, though he missed out on selection for England's recent Nations League fixtures.
