Iraola backs his forward
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has defended summer signing Bradley Barcola following heavy criticism from the French media. The 24 year old received harsh reviews after France beat Belgium 4-1 in the Nations League on Monday. He registered just one chance created and two shots during that game, leading to questions over his end product.
Iraola completely rejected suggestions that the forward is struggling. He pointed out that attackers are often unfairly judged only when they fail to score. The manager stressed that getting into good scoring positions is what matters most.
Injuries force tactical shift
The manager needs Barcola to step up ahead of Sunday's match against Manchester City. Liverpool are facing an injury crisis in attack, with both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo ruled out of the high profile clash.
Iraola is keen to boost the player's confidence so he can reproduce the level of performance he consistently delivered for Paris St Germain.
Versatility across the front line
With key senior forwards unavailable, Barcola could be asked to play as a centre forward against Manchester City. Although it is an unfamiliar role, Iraola is confident the player can adapt.
Iraola explained that Barcola can play anywhere across the front three positions. While he has played mostly as a left winger, he has also featured on the right and as a striker. The coach described him as a top player who remains extremely valuable to the team.
