Solid win secures playoff ticket
Inter Miami CF locked down a spot in the 2026 MLS playoffs following a 2-0 victory against New York City FC at Nu Stadium on Wednesday night. Germán Berterame opened the scoring by tapping the ball past goalkeeper Matthew Freese, off an assist from Luis Suárez. This goal ended a scoreless streak for Berterame that started after a match against the Philadelphia Union on May 24.
Rodrigo De Paul added the second goal in the first half. He connected with Lionel Messi outside the box and sent a rocket into the upper left corner. Messi continues to lead the Golden Boot race with 23 goals and tops the assist charts with 14 this regular season.
Clean sheet and table standings
NYCFC sat just outside the playoff spots and tried to get on the scoreboard with a late penalty kick. Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair made a big save to preserve the clean sheet. The win pushed Inter Miami into second place in the Eastern Conference table with 52 points from 29 games. Nashville SC holds first place for most points in MLS.
Miami returns to the postseason after winning the 2025 MLS Cup by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Inter Miami Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The team missed the playoffs in 2023 during Messi's first year, but has now qualified in each of the past three seasons.
