Pierce Sidelined with Heel Injury
The Indianapolis Colts have officially placed wide receiver Alec Pierce on injured reserve. This decision rules him out for at least four games while he focuses on rehabbing a heel issue.
Pierce suffered a reinjury during the overtime loss against the Kansas City Chiefs. He left the field late in the first quarter and could not put weight on his left leg. He had surgery on the foot in March and spent the preseason recovering. After playing a limited role in Week 1, he lasted only a few plays in Week 2.
Following consultations with multiple doctors, surgery has not been discussed. Pierce and the medical staff plan to rehab the foot with the goal of getting him back on the field this year. The earliest date he could return is October 25 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Offensive Impact and Roster Moves
Losing Pierce affects the Indianapolis passing attack. He led the NFL in yards per catch in each of the past two seasons and served as the main deep threat for the team.
With Pierce playing just 41% of snaps over the first two weeks, quarterback Daniel Jones has experienced a dip in production. Jones is averaging 6.1 yards per pass attempt, down from his career best of 8.1 last season.
The Colts have made several moves to support the receiver room. They signed veteran receiver Darius Slayton earlier in the week and signed Anthony Gould to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday. The team also called up Nick Westbrook-Ikhine from the practice squad for Sunday.
