Studio laughter turned into action

Before Sunday match against Everton, television studio pundits shared some lighthearted jokes about Hull City winger Mohamed Belloumi. Presenter Mark Chapman revealed that the 24 year old was left out of the starting lineup because he was tired. Studio guests Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge looked toward Roy Keane to see how the former Manchester United captain would react. Keane managed to suppress a smile as the room laughed at the news.

That laughter did not last long once the match got underway. Hull took the lead shortly after halftime when Joe Gelhardt capitalised on an error from Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall soon headed Everton level, before Thierno Barry put the visitors ahead with his third league goal of the season. Belloumi entered the match in the 65th minute to change the dynamic.

An impactful substitute appearance

The Algerian international wasted no time making his presence felt on the pitch. Elliot Stroud found space down the left flank and picked out Belloumi with a cross. Belloumi feigned to shoot, dummied past defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and rifled a low left-footed finish beneath goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 74th minute to secure a 2-2 draw.

Bosnian head coach Sergej Jakirovic confirmed after the match that the attacker was benched as a precaution following his exploits for Algeria during the international break. Belloumi has made a remarkable start to his career in the top flight. He has registered three goals and two assists in his opening six matches, proving that he can handle the step up after promotion from the Championship last season.
