A Long Trek Comes To An End
British adventurer Karl Bushby is set to complete his 31,000 mile walk from South America back to Hull on Monday. The former paratrooper began his trek in Punta Aires, Chile, back in 1998 when he was 29 years old. Now aged 57, he is finally arriving home after 28 years on the road.
Bushby set two strict rules for himself when he started. He vowed not to return to the UK until the walk was finished, and he refused to use any transport to advance his mission.
Dangers Across Four Continents
Over the years, Bushby walked across four continents. He managed to cross deserts, mountains, jungles, and the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia.
He faced many dangerous moments along the way. Bushby had a stand off with a polar bear, entered crocodile infested water to avoid a guerilla war in Colombia, and was once rescued from an ice floe by a helicopter.
He swam the English Channel on Oct. 5 to start the final leg. Since then, he has been walking north while pushing his two wheeled supply cart, which he calls "The Beast."
Support From Hull City
Hull City called on their fans to welcome Bushby to City Hall. The club shared a video message from Bushby on Saturday, following their 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town at the MKM Stadium.
Wearing a Hull shirt, Bushby told fans he was sitting on the other side of the Humber. He announced that he planned to cross the bridge and reach the city around 11 o'clock on Monday morning. He added that he hopes to join fans inside the stadium to watch a match soon.
Family Reunion In The City
Bushby is scheduled to make his final stop at Queen Victoria Square in the city centre. After that, he will head to his mother's house.
His mother, Angela, said she will be waiting to greet him at the garden gate. Bushby will also be met by his son and granddaughter as he completes his long walk.
Speaking about his long trip, Bushby joked, "Odysseus was a bit of an amateur. But, you know, I'll cut him some slack, I haven't met any giant Cyclops."
