How Chicago Bears convinced Tennessee Titans to trade Jeffery Simmons

Tennessee Titans traded star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears for a massive draft pick haul.

An Offer Too Good to Refuse

Tennessee general manager Mike Borgonzi said he had no intentions of trading defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. Borgonzi received numerous calls about Simmons after taking the job in 2024, but he ignored them all. Everything changed when Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles called. Borgonzi and Poles worked together in the Kansas City Chiefs personnel department from 2009 to 2021. Poles made an offer that included a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick, and a 2027 fourth-round pick. Borgonzi said he considered the compensation and found it too good to pass up.

Shock in the Locker Room

The blockbuster trade surprised Simmons, who had told reporters he wanted to stay in Nashville and help the Titans win. Simmons signed a three-year deal in June and Borgonzi previously called him a pillar of the franchise. Right tackle JC Latham noticed the clear disappointment on Simmons face when the news broke. Titans coach Robert Saleh also viewed Simmons as a core piece to build around, but management ultimately decided the draft compensation would accelerate their ongoing rebuild.

Moving Forward Without a Star

Trading Simmons leaves a massive hole in the Tennessee defense. Simmons led the team in sacks, tackles for a loss, and passes defended. He also commanded frequent double teams that created opportunities for his teammates. Saleh challenged the remaining defensive linemen to step up and make the most of the available snaps. The Titans must now prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday without their best player, while teammate John Franklin Myers acknowledged that football is a business where players must roll with the punches.
