Houston Defense Struggles Despite High Hopes

The Houston Texans defense has regressed significantly this season, raising questions as the team sits at 2-5 heading into Week 8.

Big Expectations Fall Short

Before this season started, fans and analysts expected big things from the Houston Texans defense. Last year, the unit allowed the fewest yards per game and the second-fewest points per game. They even added safety Reed Blankenship and brought back all their key starters. Meanwhile, quarterback C.J. Stroud has played very well, ranking high in passing yards and touchdowns. Despite this strong offensive play, the defense has struggled badly and currently ranks 19th in points allowed.

Execution Issues and Missed Tackles

Head coach DeMeco Ryans does not believe the team needs a roster or scheme overhaul. Instead, he points to poor execution and missed tackles as the main problems. The Texans have recorded 70 missed tackles so far, which ranks fifth highest in the league. Ryans stated that they have plenty of players and scheme, but just need to execute better. General manager Nick Caserio agreed, noting that the defensive calls are not designed to let receivers run open.

Trouble in the Secondary

The pass defense has regressed the most this season. Last year, cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter helped the team grab 19 interceptions. Now, the secondary has only three interceptions and gives up the highest explosive rate in the league. Opposing offenses are attacking early downs and finding gaps easily. Defensive end Will Anderson Jr. mentioned that opponents simply know their style of play very well.

DeMeco Ryans took over playcalling duties after an 0-4 start, but the results have not improved much. Houston enters its Week 8 bye with a 2-5 record after a 27-21 overtime loss to the New York Giants. That defeat marked the fourth time this season that the defense allowed a game-winning drive in the closing minutes. Players admit the situation is frustrating as they try to fix the same mistakes over and over.
