Contract Not Renewed
The Houston Astros have announced that manager Joe Espada will not return to the team in 2027. Officials stated that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the month. This decision comes after the Astros were swept in two games by the Chicago White Sox in the American League wild-card series.
Managerial Record
Espada took over as manager after Dusty Baker retired following the 2023 season. Over three seasons, he guided the team to two American League West titles and finished with an overall record of 256-229. In the 2026 campaign, Houston won the division title with an 81-81 record, marking the first time in Major League Baseball history that a team reached the playoffs without a winning record.
The 2026 season brought several challenges, including injuries to key players like Carlos Correa, Jeremy Pena, Hunter Brown, and Josh Hader. The team also experienced a front office change when general manager Dana Brown was fired in August.
Long History in Houston
Espada joined the Astros organization as a coach in 2018 and stayed through the team's transition under Dusty Baker. Before managing in Houston, he worked as a coach for the Miami Marlins and the New York Yankees. As a player, he was drafted in 1996 and spent nine seasons in the minor leagues before starting his coaching career.
