A Tough Loan Spell in Spain
Things went from bad to worse for Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott on Saturday. Playing for Valencia against Villarreal in LaLiga, the 23-year-old was sent off for two yellow cards in under a minute.
It has been a difficult season for Elliott in Spain. He is yet to start a match for Valencia, making six substitute appearances so far. He has not scored or assisted a goal for the club.
Two Yellows in Seconds
The match was tied at 1-1 in the 89th minute when the incident occurred. Elliott grew frustrated with a referee decision that went against his teammate.
Referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez showed him two yellow cards in the space of seconds for apparent dissent. With Valencia down to 10 men, Villarreal grabbed the winning goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time through Georges Mikautadze.
Manager Takes the Blame
Valencia boss Javier Aguirre spoke after the match and took responsibility for the red card. He called the sending off absurd and frustrating.
Aguirre noted that Elliott barely speaks Spanish, questioning what could have been said to the official. The manager added that he would sort the issue out internally with the player.
Previous Struggles
Elliott moved to Liverpool on loan in the summer. He left after failing to get into the plans of new manager Andoni Iraola.
This follows another difficult loan spell last season at Aston Villa. Unai Emery froze him out of the first-team squad during that time.
