Maguire defends Carrick after Bournemouth defeat

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire insists the squad remains fully behind manager Michael Carrick. This comes after United suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday.

The loss extended United's winless streak to eight matches in all competitions. It capped off the worst week of Carrick's coaching career at the club so far, after his side also lost 4-1 away at Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.

When asked if he hoped Carrick could turn United's fortunes around, Maguire said the players are fully behind him. He pointed out that Carrick came into the team last season, turned their season around, finished in third position, and secured Champions League football. Maguire added that as individuals, the players are not playing well enough.

Dressing room tension and player responsibility

Staff at Old Trafford have faced criticism from players in recent weeks. Defender Lisandro Martínez questioned director of football Jason Wilcox after a defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes remained an unused substitute on Sunday. That decision came after Fernandes took issue with Carrick's tactics during the midweek defeat at Como. Maguire took the captain's armband against Bournemouth in the absence of Fernandes.

Maguire stressed that the players must take responsibility for the current poor run. He stated that results and performances have not been good enough. He urged every player to look at themselves and find something within themselves to bring more to the team. Maguire noted that they can still have a good season, but something has to change quickly after a disappointing start.
