The costly decision

Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh took full responsibility for a painful 23-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. With the Chargers leading 17-10 in the final quarter, Harbaugh decided to go for a fourth-and-1 from his own 41 yard line. Quarterback Justin Herbert was stopped short, and Denver quickly capitalized to tie the match.

Harbaugh stated in the locker room that he could not recall a time when he felt more angry with himself. He admitted the choice was entirely wrong and shifted the momentum of the contest. The team dropped to an 0-5 record for the first time since 2003 following the defeat.

Backing the coach

Despite the coach taking 100% accountability, Justin Herbert defended the decision. The quarterback stated that the offense needed to pick up the yard and that he has complete faith in his teammates.

Harbaugh later mentioned that he should have called a timeout and punted when he saw the defensive alignment from Denver. The Chargers attempted another risky fourth down later in the game when trailing 20-13, which also failed when Herbert threw an interception.
