Regret over contract comments
Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has apologized for comments he made about his massive 14 year, 500 million dollar contract. During a Spanish language interview, the six time All Star suggested he was being paid for his past achievements rather than his future performance.
Guerrero said he deeply regrets those remarks. He explained through a translator on Friday that he wanted to apologize to his fans and teammates. He promised to keep working hard to make his contract a great one.
A tough season on the field
The comments came during a difficult year for the player. Guerrero has struggled with a back injury, a concussion, and a tight right hamstring this season. He is currently batting .263 with nine home runs and 56 runs batted in. These are career lows for a full season.
The star admitted it has been a disappointing year. He expressed sadness that he could not help his team more. The Blue Jays were recently eliminated from postseason contention after a loss to Baltimore.
One of baseball's biggest deals
Guerrero's contract is the third largest in baseball history. Only Juan Soto's 765 million dollar deal and Shohei Ohtani's 700 million dollar deal are larger. Guerrero's deal also includes a record 325 million dollar signing bonus.
After the interview clip became public, Guerrero spoke with his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, and apologized to his teammates. He is now focused on moving forward and helping his team on the field.
