Guardians Force Game 5

Jose Ramirez came through again on Thursday night. He homered and drove in three runs to help the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5. That victory sends their AL Division Series to a winner-take-all Game 5.

Pinch-hitter Patrick Bailey also went deep as the Guardians won for the second consecutive day. They began their postseason with two straight losses at home, but have now fought back to level the series. Game 5 will take place back in Cleveland on Saturday night.

Cleveland is trying to become the first major league team to come back from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five playoff series since the New York Yankees did it in 2017. Historically, teams with a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five postseason series have gone on to win 83 of 93 times.

Turning Point in the Sixth

The game shifted during a massive sixth inning for the visitors. Chicago reliever Grant Taylor was hit hard after pitching 5.3 scoreless innings over the first two games of the series. He allowed four runs and four hits without retiring any of the six batters he faced.

Travis Bazzana tied the game at 4 with an RBI double before Bailey greeted Taylor with a run-scoring single. Walks loaded the bases for Ramirez, who made it 6-4 with an infield single. Chase DeLauter added another run-scoring single, and Jo Adell capped the outburst with a liner to right that drove in two more runs.

Miguel Vargas homered late for the White Sox, but Gavin Williams got the last three outs for Cleveland to close out the win after taking over in the ninth inning.
