Costly Seventh Inning

The Cleveland Guardians wanted to stay close as the Tampa Bay Rays mounted a seventh inning rally in Game 4 of the ALCS on Saturday. The Guardians were already trailing 2-1 with runners on second and third and one out when right fielder Chase DeLauter made a mistake.

DeLauter misplayed a Jonathan Aranda single in right field, allowing the ball to get under his glove. Two runs scored on the play and Aranda reached third base. Moments later, Aranda scored on Chandler Simpson's sacrifice fly to give Tampa Bay a four-run lead.

Player and Manager Reaction

After the 7-3 loss, DeLauter took full responsibility for the play. He stated that he missed the ground ball and gave up two runs, essentially giving up three. He noted that it was his fault the runner reached third base.

Manager Stephen Vogt talked about the play after the match. He mentioned that the ball may have snaked on the fielder, or skipped by him when he took his eye off it. Second baseman Travis Bazzana defended his teammate, noting that DeLauter has been very solid out there all year long.

Looking Ahead to the Next Match

The Rays added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning to secure the victory and tie the series at 2-2. Despite the late scoring cushion, DeLauter made it clear that errors like that cannot happen.

Looking forward, the outfielder plans to move on from the mistake. He stated that they have another home game next, and he plans to come back and be better tomorrow.
