Pitching Plans for Game 4
Shawn Armstrong will be the opener for Cleveland in Game 4 of the AL Championship Series on Friday night. Tampa Bay plans to start Nick Martinez for the same matchup.
Both teams waited to announce their pitching choices due to the weather. Rain is forecast for most of Friday in Cleveland, though a window between 8 and 11 p.m. ET might allow them to play. The start time also moved back two hours to 8 p.m. ET after the Milwaukee Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series on Thursday night. An AL game has not faced postponement since 2019.
Series Standings and Team Form
The Guardians hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Petey Halpin hit a two-run home run that propelled Cleveland to a 3-2 victory in Game 3 on Thursday afternoon.
Cleveland plans to use a bullpen game. This will be Armstrong's fifth appearance this postseason. The right-hander has allowed only one hit in 5 1/3 innings while recording five strikeouts. Armstrong nearly missed the entire season after suffering a calf strain in late July, but he returned during the final week of the regular season.
Looking Back and Ahead
Armstrong reflected on his return to the franchise that originally drafted him in the 18th round in 2011. He spoke about his long path through multiple organizations before rejoining Cleveland this year.
On the other side, Martinez comes in after starting Game 3 of the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees. He went 3 2/3 innings in that outing, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Martinez finished the regular season with a 15-6 record and a 3.10 ERA.
