Late collapse in San Francisco
Golden State Warriors suffered a painful late collapse on Friday night, losing 111-108 at home to Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors held a 12 point lead after De'Anthony Melton hit a 3 pointer with 3:47 remaining. From that moment, everything fell apart for Golden State.
Memphis closed the game with a 17-0 run to complete a shocking comeback. Stephen Curry fouled Jaylen Wells on a 3 pointer, giving Memphis four fast points. The Warriors then missed four straight shots and came up empty on nine consecutive possessions. Curry said pretty much everything went wrong for his team. Head coach Steve Kerr called the late stretch an avalanche, adding that eight different things had to go wrong for them to lose.
Boozer leads stunning comeback
Rookie Cameron Boozer took over the closing stages for Memphis. Playing in just his second NBA game, the second overall pick finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Boozer scored through contact, hit free throws and scored a nine foot floater with 35 seconds left to give Memphis a 108-106 lead.
Ty Jerome also hit a late corner 3 pointer to keep the pressure on Golden State. Jerome currently leads the NBA in scoring with 73 points through two games. The Warriors tried to respond, but Draymond Green was called for an illegal screen. Kerr received a technical foul after arguing with officials about the call. Kerr complained that opponents were flopping on screens, saying players looked like they were hit by a car. Memphis sank three free throws from the technical and fouls to lock up the win.
Frustration and missing stars
The defeat leaves Golden State trying to stay steady while missing key starters. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are both out with injuries. To make matters worse, Curry said he probably will not play in their next game against Phoenix. Brandin Podziemski also confirmed he will miss the game to manage back soreness.
Curry admitted that losses like this one hurt much more than normal. Kerr noted that it is a long season and believed his squad would win their share of close finishes ahead.
