Packers Quarterback Under Constant Fire
Jordan Love is playing under intense pressure this season. The Green Bay Packers have allowed 37 quick pressures in just three games. A quick pressure means the defense gets to the quarterback in under 2.5 seconds. No other team in the NFL has allowed more than 28.
During their recent 35-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Falcons hit Love with 15 quick pressures. In Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings, the Packers allowed 17. Love admitted that the constant rush is forcing him to speed up his feet and decisions. "Obviously you always need time," Love said. He noted that more time allows him to find completions, and the team must improve its pass protection.
Struggling Stats and a Poor Run Game
The pressure is hurting Love's performance. When pressured, Love has a 1.7 QBR, which is the second lowest in the league. He has a 31 percent completion rate, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions under pressure. Overall, he has thrown for 844 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions.
The blocking issues extend to the ground game. The Packers have rushed for only 146 yards through three games, their lowest total since 1933. They are currently playing without running back Josh Jacobs, who remains on the commissioner exempt list. The team's pass block win rate is a mere 16 percent, which is the worst mark since tracking began in 2017. Individual linemen are ranking near the bottom of the league, including tackles Jordan Morgan and Anthony Belton, who took over in Week 2 after a teammate suffered a season ending knee injury.
Late Roster Moves to Save the Season
To address the crisis, general manager Brian Gutekunst recently signed three former first round picks. Kevin Zeitler and Laken Tomlinson joined the active roster, while Mekhi Becton was added to the practice squad. Zeitler has played almost all of his career at right guard, where rookie Jacob Monk has struggled and is now dealing with a quadriceps injury. Left guard Aaron Banks is also on the injury report with knee and toe issues.
These new additions practiced this week and could play on Sunday. The Packers need quick improvements as they look to get their season back on track.
