Passing a Childhood Idol
Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs made history on Sunday in Arizona. He passed franchise legend Barry Sanders for the most NFL touchdowns before turning 25. Gibbs finished the match with 58 career scores. Born in 2002, Gibbs grew up watching YouTube clips of Sanders and even chose the number 20 jersey in junior high to honor him. Sanders congratulated Gibbs on social media after the game. Lions quarterback Jared Goff praised his teammate, noting how Gibbs makes defenders miss in the backfield. Gibbs recorded 151 rushing yards and 56 receiving yards in the victory.
Slow Start and Offensive Explosion
The match did not start well for Detroit. The offense went three-and-out on the first three drives and trailed 7-0 after the first quarter. Then the team came alive with 24 points in the second quarter. The Lions scored on seven straight drives, marking the longest streak by any team this season. Jared Goff finished with 271 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Jameson Williams caught his first two touchdowns of the season. Sam LaPorta added five catches for 88 yards and a score.
Looking Ahead to the Bye Week
Gibbs now has nine total touchdowns through five games. He admitted he is chasing LaDanian Tomlinson's record for the most rushing touchdowns in a single season. The Lions defense also stepped up after giving up an early score, holding Arizona to 21 points. Detroit enters the bye week with a 3-2 record. Goff stated that he almost wishes the team could play again immediately after such a strong performance.
