A Costly Penalty in East Rutherford

The New York Giants secured a 27-21 overtime victory against the Houston Texans on Sunday. Despite the win, running back Cam Skattebo and coach John Harbaugh were very unhappy with the officiating on one specific play in the first quarter.

Skattebo was flagged for unnecessary roughness and impermissible helmet contact during a 7-yard run. The collision sent Houston safety M.J. Stewart flying to the ground, but the officials penalized the running back for lowering his head into a defender.

Skattebo and Harbaugh Hit Back

Skattebo had his first 100-yard rushing game, finishing with a career-high 124 yards on 17 carries. Even after the win, he remained frustrated about the penalty and previous fines.

He stated that the league likes to post his highlights on social media while taking things away from him. He added that he will keep running the ball the same way and playing hard no matter the punishment. Earlier this month, he was fined $7,073 for illegal helmet contact on a running play.

Coach Harbaugh was seen vehemently objecting to the call on television and talked with the linesman after the play. Harbaugh explained on Monday that players cannot run in and give tacklers their chest because the head is naturally down when running low, calling it a physical impossibility to move the head off the shoulders.

League Rules and Recent Struggles

The NFL has made a point to target offensive players using their helmets as weapons, though penalties for the infraction remain rare. Harbaugh admitted the flag caught him by surprise and defended his player's physical style.

Harbaugh stated that Skattebo leads with his shoulder and does not try to use his helmet as a battering ram. He noted they have not heard from the league yet but would appreciate some clarity on what they want coaches to teach.

This controversy arrived just a week after Skattebo saw his role reduced in a loss to the New Orleans Saints following costly fumbles. Reinstated as the starter against Houston, the running back was determined to bounce back.
