Tough News on a Birthday
New York Giants wide receiver Braxton Berrios will need surgery on his injured foot and will miss the remainder of the season. He announced the news Tuesday on Instagram.
Berrios revealed the update on his 31st birthday. He wrote that he would be lying if he said he was not miserable right now.
A Familiar Pain
This marks the third consecutive season that has ended early for Berrios because of an injury. He served as the primary kickoff and punt returner for the Giants, and also played as the fourth wide receiver.
He had not caught a pass in 23 offensive snaps this year. He was averaging 2.5 yards per punt return before getting hurt returning a punt late in the first half against the Arizona Cardinals.
Filling the Return Role
Charlie Jones will step into the return role for the team. Jones joined the active roster last week alongside Berrios.
Against Arizona, Jones had two punt returns for 29 yards and averaged 23 yards per kickoff return. Coach John Harbaugh stated on Monday that the Giants plan to replace Berrios primarily from within the current group.
