A Short Stint in New York

The New York Giants are releasing running back Najee Harris. Harris started Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, but managed just four carries for two yards. That total ranked last among the six players credited with a carry for the team.

Harris is currently second on the team in rushing yards this season with 99, trailing Cam Skattebo. Skattebo began the year as the primary running back, but his workload decreased after he fumbled four times. Skattebo did not record a single carry in Sunday's game.

Frustration Over the Backfield Rotation

The Giants had four running backs dressed for the game, including Harris, Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Junior, and Devin Singletary. Together, the position produced just 34 total rushing yards. The performance contributed to a 34-27 home loss that dropped the team record to 3-2-1.

After the final whistle, Harris spoke about his frustration with the rotating backfield. It is hard to get into a rhythm with one or two runs, Harris said. He explained that a runner needs time to figure out how opponents are playing before knowing how to attack.

Backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy led the team in rushing yards with 26 after replacing Jameis Winston. Coach John Harbaugh noted that he is still waiting for a tailback to seize the opportunity. Harbaugh stated that nobody has taken charge yet, and one of them needs to step up and claim the role.

Looking Back at His Career

Harris is 28 years old and playing in his sixth year in the league. He was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After spending four seasons in Pittsburgh, he joined the Los Angeles Chargers, where he suffered a torn Achilles tendon. He signed with the Giants during the offseason.
