Heat break winless streak in Atlanta
Miami Heat secured their first victory of the season by beating the Atlanta Hawks 129-117 in Atlanta on Wednesday night. The team had lost its opening four games after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee during the offseason.
Antetokounmpo led the team with 24 points and 18 rebounds. He has now scored 138 points in his first five games for Miami. That is the highest total by any player in their first five games with the franchise. It was also his 118th career game with at least 20 points and 15 rebounds, which ranks third most in the league since his 2013 debut.
Adebayo becomes franchise rebound leader
Bam Adebayo made history during the win. He grabbed nine rebounds on Wednesday, bringing his career total with Miami to 5,794. That surpassed Udonis Haslem, who recorded 5,791 rebounds in his 20 season career with the Heat. Haslem had held the team record since November 2012.
"Man, I can't really put it into words," Adebayo said in his postgame interview. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised Adebayo for his work ethic and called it a really special moment in the locker room.
Strong offensive performance across the squad
Miami controlled the game early, making 15 of 23 shots in the first quarter to lead 34-25. They built that lead to 69-56 by halftime. Their largest lead came late in the third quarter when Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a three pointer to make it 95-77. Hardaway finished with 14 points off the bench.
Andrew Wiggins added 18 points, while Pelle Larsson contributed 17 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Miami shot 53% from the field and scored 70 points in the paint.
