A Slow Start for the Record Signing
Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool last summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a move worth 116 million pounds. Fans at Anfield are still waiting for the player to live up to his massive price tag as patience wears thin.
The twenty three year old has featured in every game this season but is yet to score a goal for Andoni Iraola. He managed only his second assist on Thursday when he set up Bradley Barcola in a 6-3 win over LASK in the Champions League.
Wirtz started in the number ten role during a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday. He failed to impress and was the first player substituted after Ryan Gravenberch received a red card.
Gerrard Advises a Spell on the Bench
Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard spoke about the player during a recent discussion. Gerrard stated that confidence is short and simple passes are being given away.
Gerrard explained that sitting out for a period can spark fear of losing a starting spot and push a player to build consistency in training. However, injuries to squad members make this difficult right now.
The team is currently missing Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo, while Alexander Isak has been unreliable lately. Gerrard noted that once injured players return, taking Wirtz out of the lineup could help.
Support and Time for the Young Talent
Despite the struggles, Gerrard stressed that nobody should give up on such a young talent. Wirtz needs help, support, and guidance from the manager and coaching staff to review training clips and fix passing mistakes.
Gerrard believes the German international should be given enough time to succeed at Anfield. Evaluating his future should only happen at the end of the season if form remains poor after two full seasons.
Last season, Wirtz managed seven goals across 49 total appearances for the club.
