Demanding the ball
New York Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich is facing questions about his offense. The unit ranks 25th in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game. Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson was targeted only twice through three quarters in last Sunday's 26-19 loss to the New England Patriots. Wilson was visibly upset and grumbling as he walked to the locker room after the game.
Reich admitted that head coach Aaron Glenn speaks into his headset when Wilson goes long stretches without touching the football. Glenn tells him not to forget about getting playmakers involved. Reich said on Thursday that he does not mind when players make a little bit of noise, adding that he actually likes it.
Big stats and team results
Wilson signed a four year contract extension worth 130 million dollars last year. Statistically, he is off to a strong start this season. He ranks ninth in receptions with 35, 14th in receiving yards with 418, and 15th in targets with 48. However, Wilson gets frustrated when the Jets lose and he is not a main part of the attack.
Wilson explained that he has not asked the coaching staff to invent new ways to feed him the ball. He said the coaches have it covered and want him involved. He stressed that he needs to keep a sniper mentality and take full advantage of every opportunity. Reich noted that defense focus on Wilson helped rookie Omar Cooper Jr. break out with six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Injuries and upcoming match
The 2-4 Jets host the 0-5 Miami Dolphins on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The offense could receive help from returning players. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell may return after missing four games following finger surgery. Running back Breece Hall returned to practice on Thursday on a limited basis after missing three games with a quadriceps injury.
