Remarkable Run in New York
Former Premier League star James Milner has completed the 2026 New York City Marathon. The 40 year old ran the famous race on Sunday, finishing with an official time of 3:09.04.
Milner announced his retirement from professional soccer at the end of the 2025 to 2026 season. He spent 24 years playing at the highest level of the game, but he has clearly not slowed down since leaving the sport.
A Reputation for Elite Fitness
Throughout his 24 year career, Milner was known as an indefatigable presence on the pitch. He made a strong name for himself by consistently being the hardest working player in every squad he joined.
He routinely finished at the top of preseason fitness tests, even after celebrating his 40th birthday back in January. During his time in English soccer, he played for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. His incredible work ethic and personable demeanor made him a real cult hero and fan favorite across all of those teams.
Breaking Down His Race Pace
The split times from Sunday show how Milner managed his run through the city streets. He completed the first half of the course in 1:31 before going 1:38 over the final 13 miles of the race.
Overall, Milner maintained an impressive average pace of 7:13 per mile. That strong pace allowed him to finish the full marathon course in just over three hours.
Staying Active in Retirement
Milner is clearly enjoying his soccer retirement by keeping up his famous fitness levels. After spending more than two decades running on football pitches, he has now proven his endurance over the marathon distance in New York.
Hanging up his boots at the end of the 2025 to 2026 season has certainly not stopped Milly from staying active. Football fans will be eager to see what physical challenge the former Liverpool and Manchester City star sets his sights on next.
