A Star on the Ground

Lawrence McCutcheon, a five-time Pro Bowl running back for the Los Angeles Rams, has died at the age of 76. His family announced his passing through the team, stating that he suffered from a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

The Rams drafted McCutcheon out of Colorado State in 1972. The Plainview, Texas native played his first eight NFL seasons in Los Angeles. He led the Rams in rushing each year from 1973 to 1977 under coach Chuck Knox, earning the nickname Clutch for his reliability on the field.

Memorable Moments and Legacy

McCutcheon earned second-team AP All-Pro honors in 1974 and played in 11 postseason games for the franchise. During the Super Bowl in January 1980, he threw a touchdown pass to Ron Smith to put Los Angeles ahead before the Pittsburgh Steelers eventually rallied to take the title.

When he left the team in 1980, McCutcheon was the Rams career rushing leader. He finished his playing career with stints in Denver, Seattle, and Buffalo over two seasons.

Decades in the Office

After hanging up his boots, McCutcheon transitioned to an executive role with the Rams. He spent more than three decades in their front office, eventually rising to become the director of player personnel for the St. Louis Rams from 2003 until his retirement in 2016.

His family noted that Clutch earned the respect and admiration of teammates, opposing players, colleagues, and fans alike. His son Daylon played cornerback for the Cleveland Browns, and his grandson Dyson is a defensive back at Middle Tennessee.
