Baseball Star Wins Election
Republican Mark Teixeira has won election to the U.S. House in Texas, securing the seat in the 21st Congressional District. Teixeira is a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star who previously played for the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees. He defeated Democrat Kristin Hook, a former federal scientist who worked for the National Institutes of Health and the Government Accountability Office.
Teixeira ran for the seat currently held by Republican Rep. Chip Roy, who chose not to seek reelection. Teixeira won the Republican primary in March. He later posted a statement on X. Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21, Teixeira said. I am excited to get to work.
A Long Career on the Field
Teixeira started his professional career with the Rangers after being the fifth overall pick in the 2001 draft. His career spanned fourteen seasons. He earned three All-Star Game appearances, five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, and a World Series title with the Yankees in 2009. After retiring from baseball, Teixeira and his family moved back to Texas in 2021.
When he announced his run for Congress, Teixeira promised to work with Trump to secure the border and end radical woke indoctrination. The 21st Congressional District covers a deeply conservative area west of Austin and San Antonio. Teixeira launched his campaign shortly after Texas Republicans approved a redistricting map designed to favor the GOP for the 2026 election.
Different Results for Another Sports Figure
In a separate race, former sports reporter Michele Tafoya experienced a different outcome. Tafoya ran as a Republican in the U.S. Senate race in Minnesota. She lost her bid to Democrat Peggy Flanagan.
Tafoya campaigned against transgender women playing women sports. She entered politics after working as a sideline reporter for football broadcasts and hosting a political podcast.
