Relegation Threat Is Real
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes the club could actually be relegated from the Premier League this season. His warning comes after the Red Devils lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, sliding down to 17th place in the table.
United are currently sitting just above the drop zone on goal difference. The club has not dropped out of the top flight since 1974, but they now face a real fight to stay up. Head coach Michael Carrick is feeling the pressure as the team prepares to face Aston Villa and Liverpool in their next two league games.
Ten Hag Speaks On Premier League Danger
Ten Hag explained that the strength of the league makes a drop realistic if a team gets stuck in a bad run. He stated that in the Premier League it is certainly possible because all the teams are simply strong with good squads and managers.
He added that if a club ends up on the wrong side once and gets into a vicious circle, things can become very difficult. Ten Hag, who is now the technical director at Dutch side FC Twente, managed United from April 2022 until November 2024.
Looking Back At Old Trafford Record
During his time in charge, Ten Hag guided the team to third place in his first season. The following year they finished eighth, and he was eventually sacked in November when the side sat in 14th position.
Despite his exit, the Dutch coach defended his work. He pointed out that United had gone six years without a trophy before his arrival. Under his leadership, the team went to Wembley six times, played in two FA Cup finals, and won both the Carabao Cup in the 2022 to 2023 season and the FA Cup a year later.
Reflecting On Past Challenges
Ten Hag said he felt the team performed more than pretty well and could not have done better during his tenure. He also reflected on his time working with Cristiano Ronaldo, commenting on the player's application and fitness during their period together at Old Trafford.
Now, United find themselves in a dangerous spot. With tough matches ahead, Carrick must quickly find answers to stop the drop.
