Former Dodgers General Manager Fred Claire Dies At 91

Fred Claire, who spent 30 years with the Dodgers and led them to a World Series title as general manager, has passed away at the age of 91.

From Sportswriting to the Front Office

Fred Claire passed away on Monday on his 91st birthday in Pasadena, according to an announcement by the team on Tuesday. Claire recently entered hospice care. He spent three decades with the Los Angeles organization, starting in public relations before rising to the role of general manager.

Before joining the team, Claire worked as a sportswriter and editor. He covered the Dodgers during spring training in Florida for the Long Beach Press-Telegram in 1969. When a public relations assistant lost his job, Claire expressed interest and took the position that July. He later became vice president of public relations and promotions in 1975.

Shaping the Franchise

During his time in public relations, Claire helped create the Dodger Blue branding and the Think Blue campaign. In 1978, the club drew 3.3 million fans, becoming the first Major League Baseball team to cross the 3 million mark in attendance.

Team president and CEO Stan Kasten released a statement about his passing. Fred brought many victories and Dodger legends to our franchise, as well as the 1988 World Series title, and we are forever grateful for his leadership during such a memorable era, Kasten said.

Taking Over as General Manager

Claire became general manager after Al Campanis was fired following controversial remarks on television in 1987. Team owner Peter O'Malley handed control to Claire on the condition that he have total responsibility for baseball operations.

After a tough first full season ending with a 73-89 record, O'Malley considered other candidates but ultimately kept Claire in the role. Claire is survived by his wife, Sheryl, and his children Jeff, Jennifer, and Kim.
