Yamal Shines in Barcelona Victory
Barcelona bounced back from defeats against Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid with a 6-1 win over Alaves at Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday. The victory pushed the team back to the top of LaLiga after Atletico Madrid had briefly taken top spot earlier in the day.
Teenage forward Lamine Yamal scored two goals in the match. Yamal has started all 18 games for Barcelona and Spain this season, but manager Hansi Flick rested him for the final 20 minutes once the game was secure.
"When you score two goals, it's easier to go out," Flick said after substituting Yamal for the fourth time this season. He explained that he spoke with the forward at half time about managing his playing time.
Attack Delivers Six Goals
Raphinha scored early for Barcelona before Fermin Lopez added a second goal in the 23rd minute. Raphinha then scored his 17th goal of the season to make it 3-0. Yamal finished a team move from the edge of the penalty box to make it 4-0 before half time.
After the break, Yamal chipped the goalkeeper for his second goal. Anthony Gordon scored the sixth goal late on before Mariano Diaz scored a late consolation goal for Alaves.
The win was Barcelona's 10th victory in 11 league matches. It also marked 100 wins for Flick since taking over at the club in 2024. Flick praised his attackers for how they responded following back to back losses that ended an 11 game winning streak.
Defensive Solutions and What Lies Ahead
Flick had to adjust his defense because four defenders were unavailable. Xavi Espart, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia all missed the game. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong played at centre back to assist the team.
Twenty year old midfielder Brian Farinas made his full debut at right back. Farinas played alongside Yamal, having previously played with him in the youth setup. Flick praised Farinas for being professional and focused in training.
Barcelona play Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday. They then face Atletico Madrid in a top of the table match next weekend before the international break.
