Falcons Secure Gervon Dexter Sr With Huge Four Year Contract Extension

A massive new deal for the defender

The Atlanta Falcons have made a major move to secure their defense. The team signed defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. to a four-year contract extension worth 78 million dollars. The deal includes 46.5 million dollars in guaranteed money, according to his agents Drew and Jason Rosenhaus.

Dexter is only 24 years old and has quickly become a key player for Atlanta. The team acquired him on August 30 by trading cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears.

Dominating the line of scrimmage

The young defensive tackle has been one of the best interior linemen in the league this season. He ranks eighth in the NFL with a quarterback pressure rate of 20.5 percent among defenders with at least 50 pass-rush snaps. Although he only has half a sack, he regularly affects opposing quarterbacks.

His presence has helped the Falcons defense perform at a high level. Atlanta ranks third in the NFL with a quarterback pressure rate of 41.6 percent. What makes this impressive is that they only blitz 19 percent of the time, which is the second-lowest rate in the league.

Defensive line coach Nate Ollie praised Dexter's approach to the game. Ollie said it is a mindset where you have to tell yourself every single rep that you are willing to run in a dark room. He added that Dexter is embracing that mindset.

Filling critical defensive gaps

Before joining Atlanta, Dexter was a second-round pick for the Bears in 2023. He recorded 11 sacks over the last two seasons in Chicago.

The Falcons needed to boost their front-seven defense after suffering some key losses. They are currently playing without edge rusher Jalon Walker, who is out with an ACL injury. They are also missing James Pearce Jr. due to a suspension. Dexter's strong play has helped the team cope with these absences.
