Fabregas admits late tactical mistake
Como head coach Cesc Fabregas expressed regret over his instructions near the end of his side's impressive 4-1 victory against a struggling Manchester United side on Wednesday evening.
The Italian club dominated the match, but Fabregas felt disappointed after United substitute Joshua Zirkzee scored a late goal in stoppage time. Fabregas admitted that he had turned his focus to Saturday's league match against Sassuolo during the closing stages of the game.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea star said that tactically speaking the team played a rather good game. However, he admitted to telling his players to slow down the pace because of their upcoming fixture. He explained that with a 4-0 lead, he thought they could manage the game.
Fabregas specifically told striker Tasos Douvikas to stop running and remain in the middle of the pitch. He admitted that this decision was his main regret because he is usually the first person to push his team to fight until the very end. He openly stated that conceding that late goal hurt him.
United swept aside in Italy
The result heaped further pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick. The Serie A side comfortably beat the three time European champions at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
Nico Paz was the star performer of the night. He scored two goals and picked up the man of the match award after a sparkling performance. Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also found the net as Como comfortably built a four goal advantage.
United managed to get a late consolation goal through Joshua Zirkzee, but it did little to mask a poor evening for Carrick's team. For Como, it was another strong result in their ongoing growth, even if their manager was annoyed at failing to keep a clean sheet.
