Everton Move into the Last Eight
Everton sealed their place in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory against Newcastle United. Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry gave David Moyes' side a comfortable win.
The Toffees are now just one match away from reaching their first semifinals since the 2015 to 2016 season. Their next challenge in the competition is a home fixture against League Two side Fleetwood Town. With Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Aston Villa already knocked out, Everton have a real chance to chase their first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1995.
Moyes Pleased with Quarterfinal Spot
Speaking after the match, David Moyes admitted he was happy about reaching the last eight. He said that talking about quarterfinals sounds good and expressed pleasure with how his team performed.
Everton played without Jack Grealish, who was left out of the team due to a breach of club discipline. Moyes supported the decision made by the club and praised his squad for staying focused despite the situation. He noted that his players showed strong character and accepted what was expected of them both on and off the pitch.
Newcastle Frustrated by Costly Errors
The match saw Everton take the lead after Tyrique George pressed Amar Dedic into a poor clearance, allowing James Garner to finish. Newcastle later saw a penalty appeal rejected by referee Farai Hallam when Harvey Barnes went down in the box, and Everton scored their second goal moments later on the counter attack.
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle expressed his frustration after the match. Following their 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday, he felt his side lacked a clinical approach in key moments and gifted goals to the opposition.
